President Donald Trump gushed over first lady Melania Trump’s mothering Thursday at an East Room event celebrating military moms ahead of Mother’s Day.
The Trumps entered the East Room together, as the president headed to the podium to introduce his wife.
Melania hasn’t moved back into the White House full-time, instead splitting her time between Washington, D.C., Mar-a-Lago and New York’s Trump Tower.
‘I especially want to thank one of the best moms that I know, that I’ve ever seen. Sometimes she’s almost too good,’ Trump told the mostly female crowd about his wife. ‘She is so good with Barron, but he’s grown up strong and nice. He’s a good boy. He’s a good student,’
He then added, ‘So I want to thank you, you’ve done a good job.’
In a rare emotional moment, the 78-year-old president also paid tribute to his own mother, Mary, who passed away in the year 2000.
‘I had a great mother, I had a mother – she was such an angel,’ he said. ‘She could be very tough, I will say. She had her tough moments, some difficult moments she had, Pam,’ he continued, calling attention to Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was seated front row.
‘But overall very, very good, I would tell you, a great one,’ the president added.

Mary Anne MacLeod Trump was born in Scotland – something the president had called attention to earlier Thursday when regaling the fresh U.S.-U.K. trade deal.
The first lady made brief remarks to the military moms.
‘Motherhood. The life-changing events that makes women invincible and exposed at the same time,’ the first lady said.
‘It’s remarkable, really, that my son’s life creates unimaginable, unpredictable concerns and triggers for me, even until this day,’ she noted. ‘All caring mothers understand this rare feeling – nothing against fathers,’ she said with a laugh, motioning to the president who stood at her side.
‘But in my opinion, and I’m sure everyone in this room agrees, only a mother can grasp this particular point,’ Melania added.
She then spoke of the ‘personal sacrifice’ given by military mothers and the challenges of caregiving.
‘I urge you to prioritize your well being, nurture yourself,’ she advised. ‘For your strength is the bedrock of a brighter future for our children. By caring for ourselves, we empower the next generation to thrive together.’
The military moms event marked the first of two East Wing events on Thursday, with Melania slated to make a second White House appearance to roll out a postage stamp featuring the late first lady Barbara Bush.

Melania attended Barbara Bush’s funeral in 2018 without her husband, who had been deeply critical of two of Barbara’s sons – former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
Neither the ex-president nor governor are expected at the White House Thursday.
Daily Mail reported earlier Thursday that Melania won’t accompany the president on his trip to the Middle East next week.
Trump leaves Monday and will travel overnight to Saudi Arabia and then head to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, returning to the White House Friday.
She did travel with him to Rome last last month to attend the funeral of Pope Francis.
The president was asked about a new Pope being chosen as he exited the first lady’s event.
‘I’ve seen the smoke but I haven’t seen the Pope,’ Trump said, later saying that he was honored new Pope Leo was an American.
