The scene of a fatal crash where the wife of Lufthansa’s CEO drove into a pedestrian has been pictured, as her lawyers claim she gave first aid to the dying woman.
Vivian Alexandra Spohr, a 51-year-old top manager and wife of Carsten Spohr, was behind the wheel of an SUV when it collided with Gaia Costa, 24, in the Italian commune of Porto Cervo, Sardinia, on Tuesday.
Ms Costa, a babysitter, had been crossing the road at a zebra crossing when the tragedy occurred.
She was still alive when help arrived but sustained serious head injuries and died at the scene, La Repubblica reports.
Pictures taken in the aftermath show Ms Costa’s body covered by a large white sheet and lying on the ground next to a black SUV. Several other emergency response vehicles were parked around the scene.
Reports previously suggested that Spohr, who was driving alongside her daughter, initially didn’t notice the accident and was stopped by a passerby before fainting when she saw what had happened.
But Ms Spohr’s lawyer, Angelo Merlini, said on Saturday: ‘Contrary to what was previously reported, Vivian Spohr stopped after the accident and provided first aid to the girl.
‘However, after an initial attempt at resuscitation, Vivian Spohr lost consciousness and fainted.’

He added that Ms Spohr collided with the young woman at a ‘very low speed’ in her car, which has an automatic transmission and is very heavy.
According to one witness at the scene, moments after the collision, the businesswoman opened the door of the vehicle and ‘immediately realised what had happened, put her hands to her face and collapsed to the ground.’
Ms Spohr is being investigated for negligent homicide in road traffic, according to La Repubblica.
She underwent alcohol and drug tests after the crash, but they were negative.
Ms Spohr had been on holiday at her family’s vacation home in the seaside resort but returned to Munich following the incident – even as prosecutor Milena Aucone was registering her as a suspect.

Her lawyers released a statement on Friday saying she is in a state of ‘dismay and grief’ and reiterated their full acceptance of responsibility and willingness to cooperate.
‘The woman has placed herself completely at the disposal of the judicial authorities for the necessary investigations and, while aware that such a great personal loss cannot be remedied, will take steps to mitigate the consequences,’ the statement read.
CCTV reportedly captured Ms Costa crossing the street, before noticing an SUV approaching her.
She attempted to stop it with a wave of her hand but was knocked to the ground and banged her head.
An ambulance arrived at the scene quickly and paramedics spent more than 20 minutes trying to revive her.
The SUV has been seized and will undergo technical investigations, while the examination of Ms Costa’s body was conducted on Wednesday.
Mayor Gianni Addis said: ‘Gaia was a young woman who was deeply involved in the city’s social and cultural life.
‘She was passionate about our traditions and never missed the parades of the local folk group.’
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing.
